Expectations for a baby shower hostess vary greatly from one social circle to the next. One common expectation prevalent in some groups is for baby shower cakes to be made from scratch. But with a busy schedule and little precious time for crafting your own cake, what's a girl to do?
Head to your local grocery and pick up a frosted cake suitable for your party. Store frostings and toppings can often be a give away for a store bought cake, so we suggest picking up a couple extra toppings for modifying your cake's appearance.
Modifying the cake
Modify the store's cake frosting by applying your own cake toppings. Stop by the aisle that has colored powders and edible cake candies. Or consider making your own batch of frosting and apply a second coat to the cake exterior. As long as the two colors coordinate, it's fine if the original cake color is noticeable in places.
The nuts applied by stores are often uniform in appearance. So pick up whole almonds, pistachios or your nut-of-choice and manually chop them at home. Once the nuts are in varied size and appearance, apply them to the cake topping.
Even if your cake is still somewhat noticeable as being from a store, guests will appreciate your shower cake upgrades!
The store bought cake alternative
Are you still not convinced a store bought cake is for you? Ask a friend to be a cohostess and request they make the baby shower cake!
