Round checkerboard cakes are created by forming concentric rings of different colored cake (think a bullseye). Many will opt to purchase a checkerboard kit at a local specialty baking store. An equal-sized ring of cake is cut from within each cake, then swapping the equal sized rings of cake from one to another.
